Wrapping up Projects

We are fast approaching the end of my internship as the interpretation intern of the First Ladies National Historic Site (FILA). Nonetheless, I am diligently working on making a lasting impression here.

Community Engagement: National Monument Booth.

Recently, I led the community engagement event at the Studio Stroll Market in downtown Canton. Since the subject of the event was art-related, I decided on making a monument-themed booth to represent FILA. We happened to be short on supplies this year, so I also suggested a new activity for the youth. Thus, the community was encouraged to illustrate their own monument on white boards. This allowed us to use reusable materials while still providing the public with a fun experience.

Periodically, FILA will hold staff meetings at varying levels of authority, which I am encouraged to take part in. I was not very talkative at the start because I was unsure if I was doing “important” work in the middle of my training. However, now that I have several projects underway, I look forward to informing others about my work. At a recent staff meeting, I requested that my coworkers create questions that they hope my archival research will answer for them. My coworkers enjoyed the experience, and this will ultimately allow me to create a Q/A sheet for future Saxton House Tours.

I have grand plans for an art project that will be given to the site, and I am glad that I have the freedom to create art the way that I want to – for work. Unfortunately, I did forget my personal watercolor palette at home before starting this internship. Yet, LHIP had given me the necessary resources to reassemble it. This is simply one of many steps that I have taken to create something unique. Without giving away too many details, I can say that I intend to work with watercolor and glass, with the Saxton House as my muse. Everyone can look forward to seeing the finished product soon.
