Week 9 – Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve

Since I have been stationed primarily in an office setting for the duration of my internship, my supervisor wanted to make sure I got a look at communications at the park level and had the chance to get into the field. They worked with the Chief of Interpretation and Public Information Officer, Kathy, at Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve to arrange for me to shadow her for a couple days. Great Sand Dunes was having their Junior Ranger Day event this Saturday, so during my visit to the park I helped prepare for the event. I drafted a press release, gathered supplies, and printed and laminated signs. Kathy talked to me about the history and creation of the park, and current issues they face today. This information came in handy the next day when I helped review a communication plan regarding proposed fee changes. It was a great experience to talk about public affairs and communications at the park level, and use what knowledge I’ve gained at the regional office. Great Sand Dunes was also incredibly beautiful, with a really interesting geologic history.
