Wandering through the Wild, Wild, West (of Texas)

Howdy! My name is Savannah Balderas. I work for the Blackwell School in Marfa, Texas. Join me today while I drive down to Big Bend National Historic Park to get my PIV card- the government card that’s gonna let me do all the good stuff (all the important things). And to also walk around the local community and let them know what Blackwell School is- who, what, when, where, why- everything about it. And how they can ask their questions, comments (pause) and concerns OR suggestions for the school. Let’s go! :)

Before I leave I just gotta steal the keys to the city (Government Jeep Keys), and oop! Apparently we have the TIFMAS crew out here staging for potential wildland fire hazards today. Gotta love the desert!

While my first week has been all about getting settled, this does not mean we haven’t been hard at work. The other intern, Tori, and I have been going around Marfa, Terlingua, and Lajitas to talk about the importance of preserving this piece of Mexican American history. Our upcoming meetings on June 25th and 26th will allow anyone to talk with us and the NPS Intermountain Regional Office or to just learn what we are all about at Blackwell!

Excuse me ma’am, do you have time to talk about the Blackwell School??

Overall we got to meet a lot of awesome business owners, stop for some birria tacos with the best views in town, and….make it home just in time to bother our coworker Lee, and show off my new PIV card. Later y’all!
