We went on a field trip to the Tonaquint Nature Center. This was a trip for kindergarten students. This is a new age group I was dealing with, and there were several different methods to keep them entertained compared to our regular 4th to 6th graders. The children were great and beyond interested in the presentation we had planned for them. Ranger James and Ranger Brigit are the ones who led this program, and I was able to join in and partake in my own section of teaching. The curriculum-based lessons we taught were about the wildlife at Zion National Park and about the importance of our arrowhead emblem and its meaning. We taught the children about the importance of our land, our people, and our way of living. We also talked about our cat and canines in the park, such as mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, grey foxes, etc. We discussed their different abilities and features. We showed them real pelts, and some skulls as well. We also showed them different paw prints to explain the difference between a retractable nail in a feline. This event was a great outreach and learning opportunity. Thanks to the rangers I worked with, I was able to shadow and work with great individuals who taught me how to be great at my job.
