26 Aug Time Flies When You’re Learning!
Two weeks have truly gone by so fast! As I begin my third week at Zion, I have learned so much about the previous LHIP research that was done, the plants that live in the heat of the desert, and the animals that have adapted to this environment. From animals way up high like the California Condor and the Bobcat, down to the Whiptail Lizards and Cottontails that burrow in the ground. Plus, the opportunities to share this information with visitors of all ages has been incredibly fulfilling.
Moving alone to another state is challenging on its own, however, I have also challenged myself to see as much of the West as possible while I’m here. Who knows the next time I will ever come out this way, right? I motivated myself to complete the Emerald Pools hike, all three levels. I had a moment where I wanted to turn back. I am so proud for not turning back and for pushing forward! I also made it up the Watchman Trail all on my own! As scary as hiking is to me, I felt incredible after making it to the end of both trails. Plus, the rush of excitement when I finally made it back out! I must say not only are the views breathtaking, but they truly make me feel like myself. I’m surprised with my excitement to try a new trail or trying to remember all the incredible facts on conservation and the animals that have always called Zion home.
I never truly envisioned myself as a teacher or going into education, however, after being given the opportunity to create my own pop-up program, I am excited to be able to share the information I have been putting together. When we all think of architecture and buildings, we imagine grand structures standing tall or very ornate structures that are meant to stand out. We often do not realize that architecture can be very intentional, like in the National Park Service. When the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was established in the early 1930s, any and all structures built for camping or visitors were and are built from the surrounding materials.
I am so excited to learn more about the natural history and the human history not just throughout Zion Canyon, but also throughout Utah. Since I got to Zion, I have been capturing its beauty on 35mm film that I am so excited to share. I know that pictures cannot truly capture the immense height of the Navajo Sand Cliffs or the vibrant greens that surround the Virgin River. Those I will cherish in my memory. That’s all for now, catch up soon!
