An educational comic book I found from 1988 about sea turtles. It most likely was used to educate the community.
My first year of graduate school in a history program prepared me for the tears, the laughs, and the constructive criticisms that accompany new experiences; It did not prepare me for the stench of dead sea turtles.
Dead sea turtles wash up on the beach which gives biologist a chance to investigate their cause of death and more. Dead sea animals combined with the humidity and the scorching sun of Padre Island is no bueno. When the smell invaded my nostrils, my stomach had a very visceral reaction. I cannot describe the smell, I can only tell you that you do not want to know it.
Luckily, I do not work with the dead sea turtles. I have spent my time at the Division of Sea Turtle Science and Recovery going through the guts of 27 bins. The letters, reports, and pictures within tell the story of Mexican and American individuals who believed the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle deserved to be protected. That is the beauty of archival work, you never know what stories may find you.
