Hello everyone! My name is Roxana Saravia and I am 23 years old. I recently graduated from Farmingdale State College with a B.S. in Bioscience. This summer I have the honor of being the Education and Community Outreach Intern for Fire Island National Seashore.

Emerald Pool – Yellowstone National Park

I have always been a lover of nature and I love to travel. Last summer I went on a cross-country road trip and visited several National Park sites for the first time. I got to see Grand Canyon National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Devils Tower National Monument, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial. I fell in love and I found myself daydreaming about what it was like working for such magnificent places. Who would have thought that the opportunity would present itself so soon?

Grand Canyon National Park

I am looking forward to learning more about Fire Island’s history, as well as what plants and wildlife reside there. Fire Island is 32 miles of unique terrain–ocean beaches, marshes, forest, and dunes. It is also home to Sailors Haven Sunken Forest, a rare Maritime Holly Forest! Long Island is a pretty diverse place to live, but the Latino demographic is not well represented among park visitors. As a latina and Long Island native I feel that my role in this program is really important. I really hope that I can inspire other Latinos in my area to come out to Fire Island and experience what it has to offer.
