My First Week Experience

Hello everyone,

I am writing to tell you about my very first week working as a summer fisheries intern at Point Reyes National Seashore in California. I had a very positive and welcoming introduction to this park, and all of the wonderful people that make it run. For my first day, my supervisor Michael gave me a tour of the facilities and introduced me to the friendly faces that I would be working alongside with at the park. My new crew and I set out into the field, and they explained to me what they had been working on all year up until this point. They walked me through the complex process of monitoring and tagging fish, and showed me the equipment necessary to do so. For the rest of the week, we went out into the field and collected water quality data, along with eDNA samples. You can see me in the attached image taking a sample, as we pumped creek water through a filter, in order to collect all of the DNA particles found in the water. Not only was this work enjoyable and rewarding, but I got to see some very beautiful areas in the park. My favorite spots were those alongside the ocean where the creeks run out.
