Throughout my academic career, I have always enjoyed doing math. I have always felt satisfied when I complete a difficult problem correctly. I’ve grown to find it fun – it’s like solving a puzzle. During my LHIP internship, I was tasked with designing a microgrid for the Cow Creek area of Death Valley National Park. This meant that I had to complete a ton of calculations: calculating the size of solar panels, the dimensions of buildings, and energy usage and generation. Sometimes I have been stumped with math problems that I would have to consult my supervisor for help with.
One of the biggest things that I have enjoyed while completing my project is solving these real-world problems quantitatively. When completing complicated math problems, I enjoy knowing that I am solving a real-world issue. When I complete each math problem, I am one step closer to combating climate change and creating sustainable energy. This is a very cool part of my project, and an aspect that I have enjoyed immensely.
