Musíca En El Bayou

This past week we had the Viva La Musíca camp at the Barataria Preserve! It was such a great rewarding experience getting to work with Latinx children from the community. We played and learned about all different styles of music and the connection to New Orleans and the land. The kids also got to do mindfulness exercises, meditation, art, dance, and so much more! I gave a workshop on cumbia music and the similarities between the history of the music with New Orleans. The kids got to make up their own lyrics to the song and learn the rhythm that makes cumbia. I also gave private lessons on guitar and I really enjoyed that! What Viva La Musica means to me is having a space dedicated to children of immigrants where they can find their own unique voice.

Oh yea we also saw alligators!
