26 Jul Making Connections
These past couple of weeks have been jam packed with education programs. One day we had over 200 middle school students come to Salem Maritime for an education program. We had our weekly preschool program yesterday in Saugus Iron Works where 65 people showed up.
Last Thursday we had a childcare bring 15 preschoolers for a preschoolers in the park program. I was very excited to have the first preschool program just for this community childcare because we are working on a bilingual program for them that will happen sometime in August.
With all the programs I have been involved with, I have been able to connect with more rangers that are a part of Salem Maritime and Saugus Iron Works. It is so interesting hearing their stories and finding out how they ended up here in Salem. Some of them are locals and some of them come from all over the country.
I’ve also been meeting and connecting with staff that were involved with making this internship happen! Last week I met Paloma who is the Youth Program Coordinator of the NPS. She stopped by for a visit at Salem Maritime with me and the other interns here. Yesterday I met Jill from HAF who visited Saugus Iron Works for a meeting with me and my supervisor. It was cool to show her around the park since she had never been there before.
Next week I’m leaving for Colorado to join other LHIP interns for our conference in Denver. I’m looking forward to connecting with my fellow LHIP interns but I am sad I will be missing out on fun events in Salem Maritime. If anyone is in the area, check out the Salem Maritime Festival happening August 4th and 5th!
