This week my assignment here at Point Reyes is really beginning to unfold and get off to a good start. I am part of a team that is completely redesigning the Junior Ranger program at Point Reyes. National Parks have a Junior Ranger Program that helps gear youth to become environmental stewards, or simply enhance their experience at the park. Children and teens can pick up a booklet of activities at the visitor center; complete the activities during his or her stay and then bring it back to a ranger to receive an award that declares them a Junior Ranger. Kids are delighted to take on this new persona and feel accomplished. Here at Point Reyes, one of our goals is to make sure the book will accommodate Spanish speakers. It will be my responsibility to translate the finalized text and create the first bilingual Junior Ranger Book at Pt. Reyes. Do you know how to say park ranger in Spanish? It’s Guardabosque. A goal I have set for myself is to get hands-on with Marin County and encourage underrepresented communities to come explore and immerse themselves in the park. I want to express my strong opinion that national parks like Point Reyes National Seashore have undeniable mental and physical benefits that should be experienced by everyone. This week I spent my time reading peer-reviewed research on the constraints that ethnic groups face.
