Website Tonto National Monument
Tonto National Monument was established to preserve, protect, and interpret prehistoric cliff dwellings, other archeological sites, and the natural resources of the Upper Sonoran Desert ecosystem. In 2019, Tonto National Monument was designated as an International Dark Sky Park. With that designation, the monument now is looking for ways to increase our visitor interactions based around both the daytime and nighttime sky. This intern will develop a daytime program around the sun using the park’s new solar scope and tracking mount. This will include developing a resource binder and operating procedures so that other staff members may give the program even after the LHIP internship is over. Additionally, the intern in this position will write copy for a website page focused on the sky for the park’s website. As this is an interdisciplinary position, the intern will assist park staff in interpretation and resource management. Routine tasks will include staffing the Lower Cliff Dwelling, website and social media assistance, monitoring backcountry archeological sites, and collecting backcountry game camera, air quality, and weather station data.
