Natural and Physical Work Environment: Nome, AK is a small remote town where most places are walking or biking distance. It is not connected to the road system and getting to Nome requires air travel. Population is about 3,000 people. There are two grocery stores in Nome. The closest to the bunkhouse is a two block walk. It has most things you would need for food supplies and other items. A second store is about ¼ mile from the bunkhouse and has a more varied selection. If you have any special dry food items that you like, you may want to bring them with you. The grocery stores have the staples but often don’t have specialty food items.

There are several restaurants in Nome and a coffee/tea shop. For more information please see:

Nome has a regional hospital for regular, urgent and emergency health care and a pharmacy in the hospital. The hospital also has an optometrist and dental but sometimes it takes up to a month for an appointment. The hospital does not have many specialists, they come in several times a year from Anchorage.

You will also have access to the Nome Recreation Center. It is about ¾ mile from the bunkhouse. It includes fitness equipment, a climbing wall, a gym, and a racquetball court. There are also fitness classes that go on daily. Additionally, there is a bowling alley which has leagues and open bowling. There is also a swimming pool 3 miles out of town at the high school.

Other opportunities for recreation include:

  • Beach combing
  • Hiking and backpacking
  • Fishing and berry picking
  • Community festivals
  • Biking (you will be provided with a bike for personal use)
  • Public Library
  • Movie Theater

Temperatures in Nome during the summer season will have temperatures in the high 40s to the low 60s.

There isn’t much fluctuation between night and day because we are located by the ocean. We also have

a fair amount of rain and very long days of sunshine. For more detailed information you can check out

average highs and lows at the Weather Underground calendar.

As mentioned above, a bike will be provided. You may have the opportunity to go into the backcountry

during work or your personal time. The park has most equipment needed for backcountry travel,

however the Law Enforcement division has first rights to this equipment. If you have a backpack, you

may want to bring it. We have a limited number and they don’t have a large capacity. You may also

want to bring a small backpack for everyday use. Additionally, we have bug head nets. We don’t have

any bug body suits. If you want more protection from bugs, you may want to bring additional items.
