The Latino Heritage Internship Program (LHIP) seeks to engage young Latino/Latina professionals in natural and cultural resource research and management, interpretation, and public affairs.


Position Description: The Pollinator in National Parks project will inventory pollinator diversity within 40+ parks over the next five years. All inventorying will happen using noninvasive, citizen science field methods. LHIPs on the project will participate in remote AND/OR in-person training to prepare staff for summer sampling in their local park(s). Employees will also act as the primary “testers” of pollinator protocols material, providing feedback to the project manager on the effectiveness of sampling techniques conveyed through a protocol document. Employees will facilitate with field sampling collections and database management to generate species lists (presence, absence that are QAQC and reflective of IMD data management requirements). This includes learning more about the species guides for park regions (including species absences), and curating databases for NPS accessioning purposes. Pollinator sampling will be targeted depending on the LHIP’s home park, but most likely with a focus on bumble bees and butterflies. SIPs will see the project in its entirety for their home park: they will learn the protocol and species guides, practice and then implement the protocol in their park and selected sites, manage the data collection, and accession this data for NPS purposes.

Natural and Physical Work Environment: Parks will vary depending on the Pollinator Hotshot field sampling season, but for the upcoming 2022 field season, they will most likely be sites located in the Intermountain/Pacific West region. Elevation ranges from 1000-8000 ft. in elevation, with varying weather conditions depending on the parks. Most parks have grocery stores (at least smaller markets) and hospitals within 20 minutes of driving. For the Intermountain parks (DINO and FOBU), there are nearby Latino communities/neighborhoods, as well as the potential for a LHIP in DINO for the 2022 field season. Crews coming from CSU will also have students from the LSAMP program, which engages students from diverse backgrounds within the Rocky Mountain region (typically Latino/Latina students given school demographics).

Abilities and Skills: Priority skills include: withstanding long field days in hot buggy environments and willingness to work in teams!

Education and Qualifications: Because this project includes extensive field sampling, the candidate must be willing to be outside for most of the day, hiking/on one’s feet, and carrying field equipment. The applicant must be willing to work in field teams. The candidate may spend some of their field sampling period in campgrounds, so a willingness to camp in a tent is required. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident (“green-card-holder”) between the ages of 18 and 30 years old, inclusive, or veterans up to age 35. Prior to starting this position, a government security background clearance will be required.

Vehicle and Driver License Requirements: Applicants should have personal transportation and must possess a valid U.S. Driver’s License.

Housing: Hotshots will mostly be camping throughout the season; however, if park housing is available at the traveling parks, then field crews will be placed in these accommodations
