The Latino Heritage Internship Program (LHIP) seeks to engage young Latino/Latina professionals in natural and cultural resource research and management, interpretation, and public affairs

The intern will contribute to the Division of Interpretation and Visitor Services. Their work will unlock the park’s story for visitors by leveraging partnerships with local organizations and developing interpretive wayside exhibits.

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site was expanded beyond interpreting North America’s first English colony in 1990 and received a certificate of acceptance to the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom in 2002. The interns work will center around the Freedmen’s Colony that was established during the American Civil War to shelter formerly enslaved people arriving on the island.

The intern will develop two wayside exhibit panels that will be installed around an outdoor patio highlighting a six-foot tall, black stone monument to the Freedmen’s Colony. The waysides will contribute to an outdoor exhibit space that builds upon a limited display in the park’s museum devoted to this pivotal era in our country’s history.

The intern will collaborate with a local organization working to preserve and interpret the history of African Americans on Roanoke Island that has strong connections with descendants of the Freedmen’s Colony. Engaging with this community, the intern will empower their voices to be involved in the outdoor exhibit development.

Duties:

Developing two interpretive wayside panels to install on park grounds.

Conversations with community stakeholders, historians, park personnel and independent research to draft wayside text.

Interpretive design using InDesign- Guidance from park staff, and Harpers Ferry Center manuals will be provided.
