The Latino Heritage Internship Program (LHIP) seeks to engage young Latino/Latina professionals in natural and cultural resource research and management, interpretation, and public affairs.

Position Description: : LHIP Intern will primarily work with BISC NPS Interpretation and Resource Education (I&E) staff on summer youth camp programming, public fishing clinics, and other visitor service projects, programs, and events. The intern will assist NPS staff in planning, orchestrating, and providing direct supervision for 8 summer camp sessions for local youth programs such as YMCA and Miami Dade County Summer Camps. The intern will receive training on water quality monitoring, plankton and fish identification, microscopy, water safety, canoeing and kayaking, and small vessel operations. The intern will also work with I&E staff and partners to plan and conduct one or two fishing clinics for local families. Part of the interns responsibility will be community engagement, specifically improving local Latino community connection with park and increasing awareness of park resources within this demographic.

Duties: 

1)Creation of weekly social media posts targeting local Latin-X audiences. Topics include fishing etiquette, ocean conservation, safe boating, and gen park intro/orientation
2) Development of 2-3 short, Spanish-language podcasts or Instagram videos on park resources to be posted on park social media platforms or website.

Natural and Physical Work Environment: Park office is located at Convoy Point, 9700 SW 328th St, Homestead, FL. Summer weather on the coast of SFL is very muggy and hot with an average temp of 89 F with frequent afternoon t-storms. Mosquitoes are plentiful. The nearest amenities to the park are 8 miles away in Homestead.

  • Ability to work with youth ages 8-18

  • Available for weekend and some evening shifts

Vehicle and Driver License Requirements: Applicants should have personal transportation and must possess a valid U.S. Driver’s License.
