Hola! What a turn of events from one day to the next? My name is Estefania Gonzalez-Reyes, I am from Greensboro, North Carolina, and I am one of the Youth and Community Outreach Interns for Environment for the Americas working at Zion National Park. I traveled over 2,000 miles across the country to the beautiful state of Utah for 12 weeks to explore the geology and history within Zion National Park. Traveling from the East Coast via plane to taking a shuttle from Nevada to Utah. This is truly an opportunity I plan to live to the fullest, getting to live in the West, so far from a large body of water.
The first week has been an information download with learning the schedules and routines of the park rangers. Through shadowing and exploring, I have learned about the flora and fauna throughout Zion, from the endangered California Condor to the deadly but beautiful Sacred Datura. Plus, I have had wonderful opportunities to connect with visitors from throughout the world who are visiting Zion for the first time as well. From inviting them to Zion’s Nature Center to attend Ranger-led Programming to learn more about Zion to even understanding the shuttle and Trail Routes!

I live near state parks and forested lakes in North Carolina BUT getting to live IN a national park is absolutely gorgeous! The dorm is incredible comforting and the interns currently living there have also been extremely welcoming. Who knew the southern hospitality also existed out West. I do not think I will ever get over seeing the marvelous Navajo Sandstone i see from my window every morning.

Going from a degree in Interior Architecture and learning all about the built environment to going to nature and exploring the construction of not only the habitable structures but also how the creation of Zion Canyon has inspired the construction of these buildings. I am so excited to continue to explore the history and geology I have before me. Furthermore, I am so incredible grateful for this opportunity to not only trave but also learn from so many knowledgeable rangers for the next 12 weeks!
