My first week in Death Valley called for a lot of adjusting. I was entering the hottest place in the world during its hottest season. But, my NPS colleagues were incredibly welcoming and kind. My supervisor Brian took me around the vast areas of the park for my first day. He explained to me the natural and cultural history of the area, and I began to understand how important and special the land is. The park is incredibly large, so this took a full day. The next day, I began to start my data analysis on energy consumption for Cow Creek, the park of the park that my project studies. This was very interesting work, and it made me excited to see the project through.
I then attended multiple meetings where I met other departments of the park. Because the Death Valley team is so small, I was even able to meet and work with the park Superintendent! Hearing from him and being able to learn from him has been an amazing opportunity. I am now continuing on with my project day by day, and learning more about the area as I go on.
Attached is a picture of the view from my office. It is extremely cool being able to work in such a remote and unique place. It is an even cooler office view!
