Welcome to Pullman!

Hi my name is Marty. I am a senior at Northern Illinois University working to get my Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences. I would love to tell you where I’m from, but I’ve moved around enough that home are the people and not the place! This summer you and I will be going on an adventure getting to know the amazing community here at the National Pullman Historic Site. In 2015, President Obama signed the bill that decreed the remaining administrative building and its surrounding a historical monument, then President Biden decreed the administrative building, which is now the park’s visitor center, a national monument.  None of this could have happened without the efforts of the still existing Pullman community. They rallied together to prevent this new monument from being torn down and turned into an even more industrial commercial zone. This has left us with a wonderful park that services not just the neighborhood of Pullman, but all of the Chicago area and those of us who are only here to visit.

My first week here has been a wonderful time getting to know not just the rangers, but the locals as well, all of whom are passionate about the deep well of history and community that Pullman offers.
