30 May A lover of plovers, pigeons, and religions

Hi everybody, I’m Victoria, a 20-year-old Latina from San Diego attending Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. I’m currently pursuing two bachelors degrees in Wildlife and Religious Studies, both of which have heavily contributed to my own personal and professional development throughout my time in school. These two majors initially seem unrelated and sometimes confuse the people I reveal this to, and they are not completely unjustified: one is heavily reliant on, and informed by, observable scientific information; the other is quite the opposite in that religion does not require empirical or legal validation to have a significant role in our lives (whether we like it or not). I go back and forth between these two fields of study, which seemingly refuse to overlap, but I challenge this notion as they both tackle underlying issues associated with the direction of humanity. I firmly believe that tackling these issues can lead to positive changes in our communities, and even though this goal is one that is frequently romanticized and seems far-fetched, it’s definitely one that’s worth pursuing. My two majors continue to improve my life in multiple aspects, and I am immensely grateful for the amazing people I’ve met, the support I’ve had, and the opportunities that have been presented to me while on this path. While there are many other times in my life that have led to my current position as a student in an institution of higher education (such as my years living in Mexico), I will spare my audience from a life story purge for the time being. Now, I am less than two weeks away from beginning my internship in Lassen Volcanic National Park near Redding, California, and I have been trying to mentally and physically prepare myself for the 10 weeks of working for the National Park Service (which is unlike anything I have experienced before). With the help of the fabulous, and HSU grad, Deirdre Hanners from Lassen, this process has been less daunting, and I sincerely appreciate how transparent and willing she has been in responding to all of my questions and concerns. Some tasks that I will be doing (and that Deirdre has helped organize) are:

• Participating as part of the Wilderness Stewardship Team
• Campsite monitoring in the backcountry
• Collecting field observation data
• Wilderness interpretation in the context of a 3-day backpacking trip with Latino Outdoors
• Bird banding
• Ridiculous amounts of bird-watching

Finally, I thank Environment for the Americas, the organization that has supported LHIP, for providing this opportunity to myself and other underprivileged and first-generation minority students. I’m excited to embark on this journey and have the chance to formally share my experiences with everyone! ——————————————————————————— Saludos a todos, soy Victoria, una Mexicana de 20 años de San Diego. Estudio en la Universidad Estatal de Humboldt en Arcata, California. Actualmente, estoy persiguiendo una doble-titulación en el Mantenimiento y Conservación de Vida Silvestre y también en Ciencias de la Religión, ambos de los cuales han contribuido a mi desarrollo personal y profesional. Estos temas inicialmente parecen que se contradicen y muchas veces la gente se confunde cuando se enteren de lo que estoy estudiando, pero no están totalmente injustificados: uno está basado en información observable y científica, mientras el otro tema no requiere validación empírico o legal para mantener un papel significante en nuestras vidas (aunque nos guste o no). A pesar de sus diferencias, estos dos temas de estudio mantienen algo en común: ambos se dedican a solucionar los problemas asociados con la dirección de la humanidad. Esto puede resultar en cambios positivos en nuestras comunidades (y también el medio ambiente que nos rodea y mantiene). Aunque esta meta es una que frecuentemente esta romantizada, es una valiosa que se debería perseguir. Las dos temas que estoy estudiando siguen mejorando mi vida en varios aspectos de ella y también me siento muy afortunada por las personas asombrosas que he conocido, el apoyo que todos me han dado, y también las oportunidades que se han presentado debido a este camino que he elegido. Ahora estoy menos de 2 semanas hasta que empieza mí internado en el Parque Volcánico Lassen que se ubica cerca de Redding, California, y he estado preparándome física y emocionalmente para las 10 semanas que estaré ahí. Gracias a la fabulosa representante de Lassen, Deirdre Hanners, este proceso ha sido menos intimidante y sinceramente aprecio su transparencia y rapidez al responder mis preguntas. Algunas de las cosas que estaré haciendo son:

• Participar como parte del Equipo de Administración de Vida Silvestre
• Mantener sitios de campamiento
• Interpretación del parque nacional en el contexto de un viaje mochilero de tres días
• Coleccionar información sobre el campo
• Anillamiento de aves
• Ridículamente intesa observación de aves
